Maskcara Beauty is a brand that vows to simplify your makeup routine without having to compromise products. I’ve been into cream makeup products a lot lately so I was curious to see If this would be a brand I’d enjoy on the daily.
This is an independent seller style format where they have “Artists” that you’re able to shop through. Before you begin, you are to locate an Artist to shade match you. All they need is a filter-free selfie in natural lighting to get you your correct shades.
For this purchase, I did not go through an artist or have them shade-match me. I wanted to see how easy it would be to shop match myself.
Trying to find my shade online is tricky. Understandably, most wouldn’t know how to match themselves so take their advice and send that selfie.
I can only speak for myself, more so, I hope they expand because I purchased four shades that could be a match. I did mix three shades to make the shade I needed.
It doesn’t bother me because I have to mix foundation shades a lot. Especially drugstore foundations so It’s not out of the norm and doesn’t get in the way of my excitement.
MASKCARA BEAUTY SHADES
I need a golden undertone with a tan tone. Also, finding the sweet spot, resulting in mixing shades. I’ll share more about labeling; for now, know these are my foundation shades. These are the only shades that work for my undertone and skin tone. If you need a reference, you have permission to use me!
In terms of shade range, I encourage them to add more in-between shades and expand their deep-deep dark section. There’s one deep shade that appears red on me. In addition, women-of-color would enjoy trying this brand, so I hope they consider that in the future for expansion.
I’ve read blogs and reviews, and a lot of fair toned women are stating some of the lighter shades were too yellow/dark for them — furthermore I recommend their shade matching process before you purchase.
MASKCARA BEAUTY HIGHLIGHTS
The brand labels their foundations as Highlight shades.
For this the brand, this is considered a shade to brighten and used as a foundation if you are that shade. It took a little for me to understand the whole name thing. But it doesn’t bother me. I call it my foundation and highlight shades to simplify it when I’m sharing in a makeup tutorial.
The contour has just as much coverage as the IIID Foundation. I believe you could use the contour shades as a foundation shade if you had a cool undertone. (for clarification, contour shades are supposed to be more cool and gray to give your face a natural shadow giving you a sculpted look)
I got the shade shadow because I felt Indigo was too red from the pictures and swatches. I mixed their Bella bronzer plus contour shade together to get the perfect color I need.
It took all the strength in me not to pick up every single blush they offered. The shades looked so good! I love the variety and I do plan to get a few more, but I enjoyed the selection. I went with Nude Blush which was
The illuminators are the items that you use to add glow to the face. I was a little unsure about these too because their swatches were not true-to-color. I ended up with the Glow shade. It’s a unique gold, but it does blend out. I don’t recommend the illuminators to be honest because they feel like the blush and I still add a powder illuminator on top.
Not necessary, however, the shade I have, adds a little glossy vibe to my look. I’m not mad at that.
BUILD YOUR PALETTE
I decided on the palette builder method. I purchased shades to fill it and ended up saving a little money because the palette was free — a savings of $20 for the palette. It’s called the HAC Stack, and it holds eight singles or sixteen eyeshadows. Check it out here
The tins that hold the cream makeup are $14 each. The palette is magnetic and holds each product securely without falling out. I’ve dropped mine a few times, and they were safe!
Here are all the shades I purchased to fit in this palette:
- Goddess (Highlight)
- Mango (Highlight)
- Papaya (Highlight)
- Cinnamon (Highlight)
- Shadow (Contour)
- Nude (Blush)
- Glow (Illuminator)
- Bella Bronzer
30 SECOND HAC BRUSH/SPONGE
I wasn’t going to purchase this brush because I have a ton of makeup brushes. However, I wanted to give their whole method a try. I added it into my order. It’s a double-ended makeup brush that you can use to do the whole face.
To be honest, You’ll be fine with any dense makeup brush. It’s not a necessity. If you have the Itcosmetics
You will need a makeup sponge, but you don’t need to purchase one from Maskcara. I find my beauty blender works perfectly fine. I still get a good blend of the makeup.
Watch my makeup tutorial where I do the whole process of the
Apply your primer of choice. I use Laura Mercier Hydrating Primer
The “Hac” method goes as follows: apply your highlight (brightening) shade first in the center of your face.
Next, You’ll apply your foundation shade to areas of the face where you haven’t applied your brightening shade.
Keep the contour areas of the face without product because you’ll use your contour shades to apply in those areas. The contour shades have the same coverage as the highlight shades so you’ll be okay! Don’t over-cake your face,
Next, Apply the Bella bronzer (Which I thought this would be too light but it’s perfect) And add a few dabs of blush to the cheeks.
You can then, go-in with the illuminator.
Next, Take your damp beauty sponge and blend everything. I’ve tried this many ways with their brush, a buffing brush, my fingers, and a sponge. The sponge is the best way to blend everything. You the skin-like finish, and makes everything look flawless.
Set your makeup with a setting powder and finish up with your eyeshadow and set your makeup using a setting spray.
I have been using this as my daily foundation compact for almost 2 months and I have to say… It’s faster than what I used to do. The coverage is awesome and the compact is cute/convenient for traveling.
I don’t have to have a huge makeup bag of foundations and It lasts all day as long as you set your makeup with a good setting powder and spray.
To sum it all up, It is a really nice product if you’re the type of person who needs to be out the door in 10 minutes (mom’s out there) When I don’t use it, for a full face, I used the shades as a concealer.
It’s not a thick layer of cream so don’t be afraid that it would look heavy. Use it sparingly because a little does go along way.
